Andrew noted that the FxOS app's backend can run in any JS engine that exposes the appropriate APIs. That makes it generalizable to the web, given standardization and cross-browser implementation of those APIs (or a server-side proxy).

Andrew doesn't come out and say it, but I read his message to imply that the work required to address Thunderbird's technical debt remains daunting, and it would be more promising (in terms of the work required, but also because of a greater potential for impact) to generalize the FxOS app to the web.
