Thought you all might find this thread interesting and the overall table of
counts PCORnet is accumulating.

How are we defining active patients?

Great question Tom! I’m going to share with the whole group so you all can see
how your responses varied and would skew this data.

Here are the different ways you all defined ‘active patients’ that were
identified in the LOIs; as you can see, some did not state how they defined it:

  1. Encounter Unique PATID, Currently enrolled
  2. # of patients with 2 or more clinic notes, or ED/hospital visit in the
past 5 years
  3. ≥2 visits since January 01, 2009 AND ≥1 visit since January 01, 2013 AND
≥1 recorded diagnosis
  4. 2 or more visits in the last 24 months
  5. At least 2 encounters in the last 24 months
  6. Patients with office visit since 1/1/2012

Also, the information given in the LOIs can’t account for patient
overlap/duplication of representation and there were variation in annotations
given to the other categories as well.

I would love for us to agree on the definitions for all of these categories to
the extent possible…

There were a few of you who defined this a bit differently. I can get you the
different ways articulated this if you’d like.

Thanks, Maryan. Quick question. How are we defining active patients?

Hi PIs,
As you all discussed on your last kitchen cabinet call, I have aggregated the
population overview data for PCORnet so far (from the LOIs and not including
any new Phase II sites). The insurance data table will take me a bit longer.
I’m trying to figure out the best way to represent that.

POPULATION OVERVIEW

TOTAL

Number of active patients with data in EMR

77,224,627.00

Number of patients covered by insurance plan

57,750,337.00

Number of patients for which both EMR and insurance claims data are available

35,846,869.00

Count of distinct patients with at least one encounter or record in the system

113,409,696.00
