The part of the protocol that survived numerous rounds of revision and reality checks against what happens when actually tried in REDCap is this:

Information about which of 24 sub-cohorts that patient is in, and what site they're at, is encoded in the first five characters in the `proj_id` field of the tracker. Then there is an underscore, and then there is an 8-digit random number that is unique to the patient-set from that site but not necessarily unique to the multi-site survey (not a problem because 1, the prefix encodes the site, and 2, it will be obvious which site a dataset is from because they will be uploaded separately by each site).
