I don't think any of this is new information, but they're reiterating it; in
particular, I dug into the NAACCR Plan to Implement
XML<https://www.naaccr.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/NAACCR-Plan-to-Implement-XML_20190620.pdf>
 – November 2017 (updated June 2019) and found some specifics:
7. The NAACCR organization will require the 2020 and all later NAACCR Call for
Data
submission files to be in the most recent NAACCR XML format.

8. Starting with the next Volume II Data Dictionary changes (typically these
would be planned
in 2020 and rolled out for 2021 diagnoses and later), NAACCR will no longer
support fixed-
width formatting. All references to column start, column end, and any other
metadata
related to the fixed-width format will be removed from the NAACCR Volume II Data
Dictionary and other NAACCR documentation where necessary. Once this happens,
facility
registry software will no longer be able to rely on a NAACCR-defined
fixed-width data
exchange format. This essentially will end support for the fixed-width format
at both the
state and national levels.

With the upcoming transition of the NAACCR Data Exchange format from
fixed-width to XML getting closer, many registries have questions about this
change and need to know the best way to get help.

The NAACCR XML Data Exchange Workgroup would like to remind everyone of a few
resources that can help with this transition:

- Questions (technical or not) about the format or how to process it
can be posted on the NAACCR XML Forum:
www.naaccr.org/forums/forum/naaccr-xml-standard<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/DeXqCZ6omNuoQGrDhzGrg5?domain=naaccr.org>

- The NAACCR XML Utility tool
(github.com/imsweb/naaccr-xml/wiki/)<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/lKfiCmZnMghRW2BAula2Qu?domain=github.com>
can be used to convert XML to fixed-column and vice-versa.

- File*Pro
(seer.cancer.gov/tools/filepro<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/DE27C2ko1QuE8jPRhBr5i4?domain=seer.cancer.gov>)
is another free software that can be used to convert the formats and perform
more complex operations like filtering and recoding.

- For IT folks, the technical specifications can be found in the
Implementation Guide available on the NAACCR website
(www.naaccr.org/xml-data-exchange-standard<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/bxBOC31pKPuR2B6GuDqcII?domain=naaccr.org>).

- A Java library to read and write NAACCR XML can be found on GitHub:
github.com/imsweb/naaccr-xml<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/SdYXC4xqYPu7loMmhV4pVU?domain=github.com>

- A DLL library to read and write NAACCR XML can be found on the CDC
website:
www.cdc.gov/cancer/npcr/tools/registryplus/...<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/s8eaC5yr1XFW6v5xF8MMPq?domain=cdc.gov>

- And finally, SAS macros for reading and writing NAACCR XML can be
found here:
github.com/imsweb/naaccr-xml/wiki/7:-NAACCR-XML-and-SAS<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/JE-WC68vz4uGyDj1hBiz7X?domain=github.com>

If you have developed any software tools that deal with NAACCR XML and are
willing to share them with the community, please contact the NAACCR XML Data
Exchange Workgroup via the forum and we will be happy to help.
