<SNIP> Too little money is spent on > - RAM (surgeries usually need MORE on the servers),
Yes i cannot agree more. 512 mb is not enough in a PC. 2048 is nearly the starting point for servers running 2003. > - quality power supplies, > - quality switches Yes QUALITY being the key word, HP, DELL, Cisco for the rich, Dlink for the poor. No-name cheapies are just that, cheap shit. Intel switches do funny things from new, and the fans die early. > SCSI is not providing any value for money any more when > compared to SATA, <SNIP> Sorry but sata is for small sites only. Any more than 10 PC's and sql means scsi. Sata just can't sustain the throughput required, and the servers just don't have good responses, Especially when you want to move huge gobs of data about, like backing up sql databases before upgrades. This comes from hard won experience over the last 2 years with dell servers. And I am comparing server sata raid with server scsi raid here, nothing in software. I thought the cost saving with sata raid was worthwhile but a 7.5K server only becomes a 8.3K server when you add Scsi. And the difference is amazing !
