Q2. when i put a preinstalled ubuntu linux hard drive into my win98 pc,
X goes into a panic and i get back to the command line login. I know
that if i did a new ubuntu install from the CD on that machine that it
would configure X correctly, but is there a way to do it from the
existing systems command line?
Hugh,
With Mandrake I've had the same experience.
I gave up trying to use a removable HDD with it between two machines
with video card and some other differences, despite the same mainboard.
It worked once, re-configuring itself to the differences, but did what
you described after that.
I felt persisting with it was trying too hard.
