I think this highlights one of the problems for Argus Support. You keep
your domain knowledge all in-house. One cannot ask one's mate for help
because he got the same answer and gave up on Argus because it all
seemed too hard.
As I said before I think you need to build an on-line community. It will
make things much easier for you.
David,
I haven't set up Argus on Linux, but I sure have on Windows, and it
isn't difficult if you have a modest technical background.
I'm not sure that most of the potential users of it have any technical
background, and will rely on more skilled 3rd parties to set it up for
them. Like they do with most of their software. This list is unknown to
such people, who vastly outnumber the savvy bods like yourself.
I value this list and its contributors greatly, but I am sometimes
frustrated by how far removed its participants are from recognising the
needs of the majority of GPs who've adopted practice computing since
1999 and, in the main, possess user level skills in their clinical and
PM software, and feel a real sense of achievement because they can
manage to update MD, or whatever, and their virus definition files
themselves.
And they often need support when they try to do thing they don't yet
understand and get into trouble.
Sadly, what Ross offers will suit techies when they first encounter
Argus, and most non-do-it-yourselfers will rely on them as well. If Argus
is to remain freeware then providing technical support and project
management for a fee is their best source of potential revenue. Can it
be had both ways? I doubt it.
The GP computing scene has a much more fragile base than most are
prepared to acknowledge, and the coming pressures will test it severely.
ps. I haven't looked at Pitiful yet. Holidays are just that.
