Sid is the current 'unstable' release of Debian. Debian is the best variant of GNU / Linux available. Others like Red Hat are for people who have not yet discovered Debian.
Many new distributions like Knoppix, Mephis, Ubuntu are simply Debian packaged with extra bits. Debian's 'unstable' release is probably more stable than any other operating system on the planet, except for Debian testing and Debian stable. Each release of Debian is named after a character from the movie 'Toy Story', eg. Potato, Woody, Sarge, Sid. Peter.
