Massachusetts E-Prescribing Initiative Publicizes Results

February 03, 2006

The eRx Collaborative, a Massachusetts electronic prescribing initiative, announced that its participants over the past two years have transmitted more than three million electronic prescriptions, Health Data Management reports.

The program, which was formed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Tufts Health Plan and later joined by Neighborhood Health Plan, has provided PDAs and e-prescribing software to 3,400 physicians in Massachusetts. The organizations have spent more than $3 million on the initiative.

At the end of 2005, physicians in the program were canceling more than 4,000 prescriptions each month as a result of interaction alerts generated by the e-prescribing software, according to the eRx Collaborative. Also, the system, which includes formulary information, helped reduced payers' drug expenses by 1.5%.

The eRx Collaborative this year aims to increase physician participation in the Massachusetts program, expand its partnerships with other state health plans and assess the impact of e-prescribing on quality, safety and affordability, Health Data Management reports (Health Data Management, 2/1).

Note this is not just printing prescription - this is e-signed scripts sent to the pharmacist to be filled when the patient walk in. No paper involved.
