Richard,

These links provide pretty high-level explanations:

An Executive’s Guide to Web Services

The Fundamentals of Web Services
http://www.webservicescenter.com/frame_Overview_WS.htm

I am pleased that NEHTA have finally given us something to go on, and I am relieved that they are pushing us to adopt what I think is a great technology. I have only two questions about their strategy:

1. Not using SSL...?

2. How do they propose to accommodate GP to GP communication? Which GP gets the honour of maintaining a Web Server in their practice? Oh sorry, did you say that EVERY practice will maintain a Web Server so that it can be a producer, not just a consumer of data? Well, seeing as the deployment and maintenence of clinical systems is so easy, this should be a trivial exercise. Of course the GPs will carry the cost of the deployment you say? Oops, there I go again. I guess the success of the broadband rollout strategy will be used as an example deployment, and the Feds will pick up the cost. Has somebody told the minister?

I'm holding my breath over here.

Interesting
At least it is a bit more concise and punchy than the wishy washy stuff that usually comes out of govt bodies. I am not entirely clear what is meant by "web services" vs the current setup - does this mean HTTP based comunication - ie real time, 5 transaction authentication of packets vs asynchronous UDP as in current E mail? What are the implications for state govts that have already signed up to contracts with providers such as Healthlink? Will some bureaucrats be resisting so they are not seen to have sold their mastrers an expensive white elephant?

Hi All,
Two position statements on secure messaging have appeared on the NEHTA site (www.nehta.gov.au) under the publications section. Worth a look.
Apologies to all those who had spotted them.
Cheers
David
