Well, now Firefox / Mozilla does have a way of handling XML in the way we want to, but when we started, it didn't so we developed exclusively for IE 5.5+.

This would be one of the things we would address in a rewrite, it was decided that we would, for the time being, keep with the IE only stance and use time to extend the program rather than fiddle with browser compatibility. Especially since the browser-market share was dominated by IE.

I am sorry I don’t know the actual details but will refer it to Allan Palmer and Lee Boyce.

The ‘Market’ as we have encountered it does not seem to worry too much.

...

All of this is done on open source platform with the exception of the use of IE 5.5 or greater [because of its superior abilities to handle the xml data islands], in a secure environment with SSL 128 bit encryption. It is available to any authorized person at any time and at any place they can connect to the web.

...

I'm drifting off topic a little, but what aspect of IE is superior in the handling of XML data islands?

I assume you are referring to AJAX style functionality?  Is there something IE does that Firefox can't?
