Not really typing but I was impressed by Dasher - see
http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/dasher/ - but their Web site seems to
be down as I write this. Dasher is deliberately free of patents and open
source implementations exist.

Also not really typing, IBM have an impressive stylus (or mouse) based
system called SHARK which uses "sokgraphs", but it is patented to the
hilt and they have not licensed or produced any commercial
implementations. There is a free demo available but it is not useful for

But if your friend is after a chording text entry system like the old
MicroWriter (I remember those), then the Twiddler2 might be the go - see
