The chances for misuse are also greater. Employers could use the information to exclude applicants for employment due to medical history, and insurers to refuse insurance to those who are sick or have genetic predisposition to illness.

The above processes are already under way here. About 4 weeks ago I was run into from behind on my way home from work. When I rang my MVA insurer the following day their usual set of questions proceeded until I was asked to detail the prescribed medication I was taking.

I told them that it was none of their business and and that the request was unreasonable as there was no chance I'd be seen to be in the wrong - the car two behind me ran into the guy behind me, who was pushed into my car - so I refused as I saw it as being an unreasonable and intrusive request. After much debate with the 'supervisor' the best I could argue them down to was a letter from my GP, saying nothing I was taking would affect my driving, which it wouldn't.

I then found I could make a claim directly against the insurer of the driver in the wrong and I'm doing this, side-stepping my insurer. Once the car is fixed, I'm changing insurer.

I rang the National Privacy Hotline and spoke to a guy who basically said they couldn't help and was totally disinterested. His only comment was that insurance companies do these sorts of things.

So Tom it seems we've found a point of agreement.
