Running MD client on the file server gives the biggest speed jump (ie terminal server). I have one fat client connected to the server over Gigabit connection - the speed on this machine is only just acceptable whereas any old client (even my $20 ebay sourced Winterms) give brilliant speed when executing remotely in a terminal session. Our server is not that highly spec'd either (P4 2.4, 2Gb RAM, 2 SATA Sata drives in Raid 1, $250 ASUS motherboard).
