Thanks Peter

I have been contemplating the most efficient means of delivery of digital imaging to the Patient/client and the Doctor/clinician referrer

Pathology has (partially) overcome the problem and patient concept of needing hardcopy results to personally transport between doctors and keep at home- a copy can be forwarded electronically on request /with permission from the patient- admittedly annoying to need to phone – and a disturbance to the pathology reception staff. What would they do if the phones were silent!

My preference for receipt of imaging results in order of preference would be:

  • Unique URL to the patient file and films  - Embedded within the results transmitted electronically and incorporated in the EMR eg MD - would be a unique URL to the patient file and films held at the individual DI facility ( I say  Patient file – so other films can be accessed for comparison)- ie click o the URL in the result and with appropriate security precautions , and with recognition of login details for specific doctor/computer. I understand Argus Connect is about to start this process – but do not have personal experience
  • We are able to access films in NHW hospital wards via Healthlink/Orion system by clicking on embedded link to films, and file
  • Access to films via web based service- secure access required- also with written report eg Agfa Web1000
  • Transmission of films via net to other hospitals, DI facilities on request – this assumes compatibility between programs
  • Supply images on Memory Stick – with embedded readers (DiCom, etc) – each facility could add to stick – less likely to be lost as smaller and fits into purse, pocket, etc – able to be accessed via USB port

Then comes the undesirables!!

  • Rewritable CDs – essential as ‘collections’ of single CDs will guarantee lost discs, etc
  • Single use CDs – Ah, drinks!
  • Nothing wrong with good old Films!

Subject: [GPCG_TALK] Using Radiology Image CDs as drink coasters

At yesterdays radiology quality workshop it was suggested that radiology images as currently delivered were only useful a drink coasters.

Any views on what GPs want from radiology re images and the CD method of delivery?

I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganising, and a wonderful method it can be for creation the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency and demoralisation."
