Peter
I have read with interest the comments made so far in answer to your question.
You and other readers of this thread might be interested in having a read of the detailed description of what is being done in Medical Director v3 regarding viewing of high quality images in the patients file.
In summary, the report is downloaded as a structured HL7 message and in the message is the web address to view the image via a streaming image from a Web Server at the Radiology Practice. The downloaded report also has the necessary security bits and pieces and all the practitioner has to do is open the report in MD and if they are connected to the web, the image all but instantly appears next to it.
50 to 60 MB DICOM images can be viewed this way for about 20 KB hence it does not gobble up band width and as the image is not stored on the practice server, space is also not an issue.
It really is spectacular and completely negates the need to send out the "drink coasters" others have spoken about. The link above has a number of frequently asked questions about this new product/service together with screen grabs etc.
My guess is that this kind of approach will soon become the norm and films and CD's will soon disappear.
Hope this is of interest.

Subject: [GPCG_TALK] Using Radiology Image CDs as drink coasters

At yesterdays radiology quality workshop it was suggested that radiology images as currently delivered were only useful a drink coasters.

Any views on what GPs want from radiology re images and the CD method of delivery?
