Aren't petrol generators cheaper than a battery as big as a fridge??

No. Because you would need one that
1.) is acceptable noisewise and emissionwise by the neighbourhood
2.) kicks in automatically
on top of a UPS that at least can bridge a few minutes and conditions your
power

UPS is a given.
Nobody is going to complain about generator noise if there is otherwise no power.
Nobody is going to complain about emissions if there is otherwise no power.
Honda four stroke engines are as clean as they come.
Easy to mount a generator in an acoustic enclosure if noise is a major issue.

15kWh for 5 hours is only 3kW.

A noisier 3kW generator rrp is $2360.

A quiet 3kW generator rrp is $4220.

But a generator could keep you running for as long as needed (days, weeks, months) as long as there is petrol.

A noisier generator and a normal UPS is a more functional lower cost option than a huge UPS and one doesn't need a crane or forklift to move it!

Yes, my UPS is as big as a small bar fridge and weighs 400 kg, but suitable
generator would be at least as big and much dearer

How many kWh does one get for $4k?

about 15 I guess

Laptops are rather useful for riding out blackouts or power cord accidents.

Laptops are not made for continuous operation. They ususally don't last long
under the thermal stress, nor do their keyboards usually take well the
8-hours-a-day punding on 5 days a week every week.

(We aren't running laptops because we don't have major power problems. I have had no thermal stress problems with laptops in the office over 15 years - no electrical failures; only ever mechanical problems.)

I keyboard longevity is an issue, external keyboards of extremely high quality (switches rated at 10M keystrokes with 5 year warranty) are <$30. We have these: http://www.mitsubishielectric.com.au/products/compp/keyb/index.html
