Health service management rapidly growing
CANBERRA: Health service managers are the most rapidly expanding employment sector in
health during the period from 2000 to 2005, increasing by more than 107 per cent from 4200
to 8600. During the same period, the number of general medical practitioners remained
largely stable at 36,300, while the number of medical specialists increased by 47 per cent to
23,600 and the number of nurses increased by 13 per cent to 204,700. The numbers of
personal care and nursing assistants increased from 36,100 in 2000 to 68,500 in 2005,
reflecting the continuing ageing of the Australian population.
