Proposed Medicare (and other services) access card (smart card)

A new access card (smart card) is to be introduced to replace the Medicare Card and 17 other federal government health and social services entitlement cards from 2008. The Commonwealth Government has set up the Consumer and Privacy Taskforce to advise it on the introduction of the card.

The Taskforce wishes to consult the community and has asked for submissions by 27 July 2006.

Individuals and organisations wanting to make a submission should read the Taskforce’s Discussion Paper at www.humanservices.gov.au

That site also has more government information about the card. Various organisations have expressed concerns and criticisms about the card proposal: some helpful sites are the Office of the Victorian Privacy Commissioner www.privacy.vic.gov.au and the Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre http://www.bakercyberlawcentre.org/privacy/id_card/index.htm

Cheers
