Hi Andre, we are not using commercial solutions nor is it research. I give
it to students to do as part of their project unit of study. The user
specifies what they want and I supervise the student by guiding their
solutions, making sure it is sufficent for assessment and suitable for the
client. There are commercial products for Analytics/OLAP but in some cases
people don't want or need something so extensive. Furthermore until they
see a small implementation and have engaged with it both at the design and
user level they are unsure just what it is they want. At the end of one of
our projects they should be in a good position to understand their needs
and limitations, and to have confidence in making decisions about a much
richer solution. In some ways this type of project is doing tech transfer.
Also it gets the students involved in Health IT and looking for developing
a future in it.
It also a means by which we can develop a longer term relationship with
groups by doing something small first, learning how to work with each
other and build ideas for much larger projects that will need significant
funding. Ultimately that is the level I have to work at -large funded
research projects.
