I have heard that because Telstra refuses to switch on the ADSL2 system that it
has set up, Internode and other ISPs have set up their own ADSL2 networks.

Is this a correct summary of the situation?

i can confirm that optus has rolled out adsl2 locally in manly, and via the forums (?fora) at whirlpool, this is working towards australia wide adsl2 access (and telephony) on their own network

the downside is there is no churning available for adsl2, and if you leave the optus network you lose your telephone number (and get a new one)

on the plus side, once with optus as your telephony, you disappear from the white pages too (something that i believe telstra charges you to have happen)
