Our practice is unable to get ADSL 2 currently we
have ADSL 1500/256.
I note recent postings about decreased up and down
load speed. We had problems at one stage with our MTU (maximum
transmission unit)packet size set at > 1400k which was the default for
our hardware software. Some routers along the trace route weren't
accepting this packet size and the large packets were bouncing leading us to
problems with Terminal services across our VPN. This error was only
occurring only specific trace routes and so was an intermittent problem,
presumably involving only specific nodes along the way. By tweaking MTU to
lower packet sizes the problem has not recurred. It highlights the problem
of theroetical over achievable speeds. Most PPP MTU's are
576.
Changing settings at this level is not something
most IT support / ADSL support would even think of for trouble
shooting. We tracked down our problem by searching white papers and knowldege
base on terminal services with our particualr problem.
Perhaps those with ADSL 2 might benefit from a
similar search on improving data throughput.
