You are right.

"Business" is what is destroying the fabric of society, wasting our natural
resources, polluting the planet. Business here defined as anything seeing
it's goal in "maximising monetary profit"

Well yes...(see documentary video "The Corporation if you want to know why)

...but many innovations of modern life were also brought to life by businesses and without them we wouldn't be here doing what we are doing: * machinery, in particular agricultural and earthmoving/mining which make the country wealthy
* electric lights and appliances
* telephones
* computers - hardware, software
* Google

The spectrum of businesses is not a lot different from the spectrum of people - there are exemplary and awful and everything in between.

It is the role of government to set the rules under which businesses and people live harmoniously with the world. If there is any imbalance, it is fundamentally caused by government, not business.
