Being in full control especially over software installation is the biggest plus and the main reason why I host all my websites myself > eg cons > -security can even be better if you do it yourself, depending on service provider and you own level of knowledge > -bandwidth usage cheap as chips nowadays if you locate your server in the right place > -hardware and software maintenance & monitoring issues (beyond what is > Â required for the LAN server?) Strongly suggest colocation in a data centre, and *rent* the colocated server incl. maintenance contract from the provider. That way you have full unrestricted hardware and software control without the hassles, and you get access to bandwidth (most of my servers have acces to a 9GBit (nine Gigabit) connection with guaranteed symmetric 10MBit minimum share (meaning my bandwidth never droips below 10MBits either way, but can be a lot more, up to 1 GB/s) > -need to bring in specialists for unresolvable problems Same thing applies for hosted sites > -need to consider hot-pluggable backup arrangements See above - rent the server with full maintenance instead of just renting "web space". Doesn't cost the world nowadays - I actuially wouldn't be able to siurce the hardware components wholesale at the price I pay for renting the whole thing for 2 years incl. all bandwith, redundant power supply etc.) Only drawback: you will not find a single reasonable collocating provider in Australia - they are all strangulated by astronomic bandwidth costs. You have to have your server where bandwidth is cheap & reliable, e.g. Korea, Japan, Germany, Sweden ...) - Canada and US used to be good too but have dropped out of the competitive hosting game a couple of years, there you pay now twice themoney for half the service (in Australia you pay a realistic 10 times the money for a tenth of the service which means that hosting in Oz is one hundred times more expensive (rule of thumb) than if you host in Germany or Korea Horst _______________________________________________ Gpcg_talk mailing list [email protected] http://ozdocit.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/gpcg_talk
