I haven't spent a penny on AV software, even though
I still run Windows on 11 computers - thanks to my
non cross-platform medical software.

My Winconnect XP server and XP workstations
receive real time AV protection from AVG free
edition, from:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

(My "extended" trial of this has found that it works
flawlessly, and I am getting around to upgrading and
paying for the commercial version!)

For added surveillance, I run ClamWin (free, open
source). This does not provide real time AV
protection, but is scheduled to run periodically
overnight (weekly): http://www.clamwin.com

For further protection from spyware and malware,
I run periodically overnight (weekly) Spybot - Search
& Destroy, free from:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

.. and Ad-Aware, free from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

The above are all very easily point-and-click downloads
and installs. Furthermore, theyy automatically update
signatures according to our optional preferences, and
can be scheduled to run automatically overnight as desired.

Finally, my little e-smith email server runs ClamAV
(free, open source, automagic daily updates) which
cleanses incoming (and outgoing) email.

I've saved my bikkies :-)
