If Ian is available I would concur with this.
Were you thinking in terms of a hands-on (project manager) BDFL or as an overseeing BDFL who recruits the team leader and consults with that person on how to best spend our money?
I think the project needs a leader. It may not be a BDFL but could be like the DPL where the leader heads the project for a defined period of time. In either case the project leader has ultimate responsibility but sensibly listens to everyone,  particularly his lieutenant's.

In my opinion the PL has to be a medical practitioner with IT knowledge. I say this because experience would suggest that you need cross domain expertise to create an EHR.

Ian has experience in overseeing CS students working on DrugRef and is familiar with the areas where gnumed went wrong. If he believes he knows where to go, I am happy to follow. I believe we will be able to recognise bottlenecks rapidly and perhaps can purchase assistance for those mundane but tedious jobs that will need doing (as Horst has demonstrated).

However, the only way we can get buy in, even from the enthusiast's on this list, is if we can get to a primitive but usable EHR within a defined period of time.

All this is dependent on Ian's acceptance. If he does I have pretty well mapped out his next few years.
