What do (about online Medicare claiming) you do when the HIC server is down?

I checked yesterday with my staff. When the Medicare server is down, they use the 'store and forward' function in the the Medicare Online Claiming software to do all of the steps in the process. When the Medicare server is back on line, the claims are transmitted. I don't know whether they are transmitted automatically or whether the receptionist has to push a button to make it happen - I can find out if you want to know.

The only disadvantage of processing claims when Medicare is not on line is that we don't know immediately whether Medicare is going to reject the claim. If the patient has already paid us in full, which most do, this is really not a problem for us, but if the patient has paid only the gap, our staff have to sort the problem out, because if we don't, no Medicare benefits cheque (payable to us) will be issued, and we will be waiting forever for the payment.
