Genie uses 4D, a relational database from a French company with a Mac heritage. Genie itself has completely customisable reporting - you can easily construct any query you want within the GUI, or alternatively query it via ODBC. There is no encryption or other locking involved and the GUI includes a complete export to XML.

I don't think there's ever been a case of someone converting from Genie though, it's users are generally very happy souls.
