I noted in their report of their recent visit to the UK, at:
http://www.chik.com.au/files/CfH1.pdf
that one way to "mandate real interoperabilty", the UK Connecting for
Health team had planned to "remove existing GP systems". Yes, that's
what it says.
I love it. Imagine a phone call from the Department of Health: "Dr.
Frank, we don't like the clinical and billing package that you're using,
so we are removing it."
Apparently this was not a popular or achievable proposal, so they will
now have a 'GP System of Choice' scheme. You can read about it at:

Oliver,
Interesting rhetoric and logic. Talks about choice while reducing it.
All co-ordinated through Primary Care Trusts [read Divisions with
fund-holding].
Don't worry, our current government doesn't believe in public
infrastructure and would never spend the money an initiative like this
would require, nor would the bureaucrats ever give away so much power to
Divisions.
Ironically, the British Labour government seems to know nothing about
Open Source software, as it is clearly offering choices from commercial
vendors, while enforcing a near-Stalinist rigidity of approach.
Worst of both worlds? Something we might come to expect from NEHTA?
