aha! you have just explained a failure here

fwiw my minolta dimage Xt is happy with the windoze format of the sd card, but the powerbook spits the dummy when i try and feed it the images

i thought it was a faulty sd card, but maybe no

Strange that the powerbook spits the card, in that I thought OS X could read both FAT32 and NTFS - it can't however write to NTFS volumes without third-party tools. Maybe format the card as FAT32 ?
