thx for the info

i got to inhale all that fine machine dust from cleaning what i suspect was probably 7 years of accumulated neglect

I have a small, but powerful, vacuum cleaner in my kit for removing said dust and lint.

Since mid-2004 PIVs, especially the early Prescotts, need regular removal of lint/dust from the CPU heatsink, most critically if the box lives on carpet, but they all need checking to be sure it isn't building up. Failure to do this maintenance, especially if the assembler has used a box with poor cooling, often leads to an early death.

the best thing i purloined from the old mobo was the northbridge cooler with thermal tape still intact - and it is now the southbridge cooler on my asus a7n8x :-)

Be very careful that the thermal tape doesn't lose its stick and you end up with a falling metal heatsink colliding with a component and shorting everything out. This used to be common when VGA card heatsinks used those pads. Most board and VGA card heatsinks are now secured with retaining clips that go through the PCB. There isn't the provision for them on the southbridge of an A7N8X board.

The standard fix is a small dob of non-acidic Silastic in each corner of the heatsink. Silastic tubes clearly indicate if they are the non-acidic cure variety.

Zalman make after-market southbridge/northbridge heatsinks with adjustable brackets to fit many boards where there are only small heatsinks provided. [Usually SIS or VIA chipset models, so why you'd want them in the first place I don't know]
