To be fair to them I guess any info is better than none, even if it is
not easily downloadable. I note that anyone wanting to opt out can ask
their GP to do it for them - I wonder what bureaucratic
overhead/hassle/liability is involved in this - was it made clear to
you when they were trying to get you in?

We were bribed. Simple maths. When at first you dont succeed to get

$10,000!
$5,000 paid up front- the rest to follow after a certain amount of
transactions
(uploads).
We decided not to join the trial
1/medtech cannot join in - yet
2/even with compliant software the best you can see is online viewing
only,
no downloading of your patient data is possible, no discharge summaries,
no path, no xrays, no nothing.
You give data to HealtheLink - but they won't give back.
We would have preferred them to spend the money on enabling discharge
summaries
to come by the way of pit/HL7 downloads. (whatever the vehicle)
Waste of money. The HealtheLink salesman kept phoning and begging us to
join, every couple of weeks until I pointed out what WE really
wanted. (electronic
discharges) Practices were lured, bribed, harrassed. No thanks.

Interesting Fee, thanks.
I notice the rather limited outline of HealtheLink on the NSW Health site
http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/pubs/factsheet/pdf/ehr_fs.pdf
and the much more informative briefing (though slanted to the
privacy aspects) at
http://www.privacy.org.au/Campaigns/E_Health_Record/HealthElink.html
Also from David More's site:
http://aushealthit.blogspot.com/2006/10/what-is-happening-at-nsw-health-with.html
"Health-e-Link is the state EHR (Electronic Health Record) which is
being delivered by NZ company Orion. This is the project raising
privacy concerns and poorly supported by GPs to date."
Orion appears to be majority owned by Ian McCrae, clearly a dynamic
individual judging by his internet profiles eg
http://unlimited.co.nz/unlimited.nsf/coolcompany/71065DBBBEFF510ECC2571CC007F0512
He also served on the New Zealand Government's Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) Taskforce which recommended that NZ
modify market forces in the NZ IT sector to give indigenous companies
a head start into global markets.
"The essence of the suggested ICT strategy is for both industry and
government to
support companies to grow to a scale to enable them to compete
successfully on
the global stage."
see http://www.med.govt.nz/upload/1714/cabinet.pdf
Orion is also the largest shareholder in New Zealand's Healthlink.
One could speculate that perhaps the luke-warm response of Australian
Health IT companies to Orion / Healthlink might reflect a perception
of some unfairness ? protectionism in the NZ approach. Of course I'm
just an observer - maybe those in the industry can add their insights.
