Congratulations. Welcome to enjoyable computing.

I am after a monochrome desktop MFC which is Apple Mac OSX -
10.4.8 and 10.5 :) - and Windows compatible. Linux compatibility would be a bonus - but not necessary at this stage. I have read some reviews that the Samsung and the Xerox MFC's, even though they are Mac OS X compatible in their specifications, require extra software to scan, eg Photoshop. Is this
correct? Is the Mac OS X scanning not well supported?

Sorry I can't comment on Samsung or Xerox. I can tell you that most Apple sites I've seen use Brother MFCs. Whilst not frugal with consumables (like most MFCs), scanning is certainly supported and works well. Linux drivers are also available for some machines. Newer HPs are similarly supported, although I find their software on both Windows and Mac very bloated and often unreliable.

regards,
Peter.
