Hi James,

It's a commercial impossibility, however, that any company would refuse to
make a practices data available in some form of unencrypted format (raw
tables, XML etc) if requested. Potential customers don't like hearing these
sorts of things.

I also doubt however, that any company would go much further beyond this
step which I see as a reasonable (realistic) minimum standard of service
given the highly competitive market vendors operate in.

As happens now, the onus will always be on the "importing" software company
to write the conversion to extract data from the "exporting" software or
"exporting" software's data output if available.

Companies that have devoted the resources to such programming stand to gain
from "switchers" (which is more difficult than most think), companies that
haven't won't/can't.

The "exporting" software shouldn't actively hamper this "import" process by
refusing to make the data available in some sort of unencrypted form, but in
the absence of an agreed common data set (which as Tim indicated is unlikely
to happen), the current market arrangement is what's likely to continue.

So... not ideal for consumers, but not likely to change any time soon with
or without political interference/intervention.

Regards,
Simon
