Hi John, I just got back from the last day of the Australian Financial Review Health Conference. The last presentation was specifically about telehealth (a definition that presenter Dr Anthony Smith explained means different things to different people).
A few general points that may be of interest... 1. The "7th International Conference On Successes and Failures In Telehealth" will be held on 27-28th August (in Brisbane I think). 2. Anthony discussed various projects where they deploy trolleys designed to look like robots which basically contain a camera, a computer and a wireless network all powered by a UPS. These are used to give remote hospitals in QLD access to paediatric services and are designed to be appealing to the kids. 3. In the foyer of the event, there was a vendor displaying a similar robot (outwardly) that could actually be driven around the hospital by a remote operator (the previous one needed to be pushed around). As such, this operator could be anywhere in the world... >> 1) The rural hospital should use _electronic health records_ which >> can be accessed remotely using _virtual private networking_ - >> rural hospitals would need this to be set up by IT techies, and >> nursing and medical staff would need some training to adapt >> to the new computerised medical record system. While this would be ideal, I noticed in one of Anthony's slides that next to the desk bound video conference device was a ?page projector? (not sure of their real name but they look like an overhead projector). Essentially they video whatever is put under the camera which could presumably be used to transmit notes to the remote clinician. Anthony is a senior research fellow working in the Centre for Online Health at the Uni of Queensland. I didn't get a chance to speak to him but he would be worth talking to at some point.
