I find your last comments bizarre - do I need a better solution in the
event of a health crisis than ringing an ambulance? Would a
self-diagnosis and treatment be a better solution?
As someone running Linux on a PS3 I'm not sure your opinion is
representative of the masses.

Poor analogy.
Prevent the health crises and you wont need an ambulance. With what I
have described, the server ceases to be mission critical. I can run the
surgery without "the server", at least for a short time. The programs I
mentioned will seek out their database as long as physical connection
exists.
The PS3 will boot into either its native OS or Linux. Linux has
advantages over the Sony OS in some scenarios. It's all about
maintaining your options. I think the masses would like that.
