Does anyone know what the situation is with getting access to the latest GPFS

They have version 5.1.7, but nothing after, and well 5.1.7 does not support
RHEL 8.8 or at least building the kernel module fails.

BTW, you may well know this, but this shouldn’t be how you are determining
whether it’s supported or not. The support matrix is here:

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/storage-scale?topic=STXKQY/gpfsclustersfaq.html#fsi

5.1.7 indeed does not support RHEL 8.8, and 5.1.8 only supports up to
4.18.0-477.13.1.el8_8. These do sometimes move, even for the same point release
of Storage Scale, as more testing is done or new kernels come out, so it’s not
a given that, say, 5.1.7.1, will remain at 3.10.0-
1160.90.1.el7 for a highest supported kernel release for RHEL 7.9.
