Dear Andrew, first of all, we'd need much more details about what versions on which system you are using and what key server you have set in GPG Keychain Access.
Could you please copy & paste the form on https://github.com/GPGTools/GPGTools/wiki/Troubleshooting ? That would provide us with important information we need to help you out. As soon as we have that info we can most likely give you more specific info on how to solve your issues. If you encounter any crashs, please also consider adding a crash log or some console output.
