I use Linux kernel 5.8 (openSUSE Tumbleweed), gphoto2 2.5.23, libgphoto2 2.5.25. After modprobe v4l2loopback, ls /dev/video* changes from none to: /dev/video0.
Camera is a Sony HDR-PJ810E Handycam (around 5 years old), model recognised by Linux kernel, but only recognised by gphoto2 --auto-detect as "USB PTP Class Camera". gphoto2 --summary error: "The supplied vendor or product id (0x0,0x0) is not valid."
