Hi Marcus! It's been too long! 

  As soon as I read the problem an idea popped into my head that I thought to 
share with Dr. Busscher. 
  I think what might work here is something from Astrophotography. You might 
try a motorized rack and pinion focuser and controller (There is some arduino 
code that emulates a Moonlite focuser) and software or code from "auto focus" 
like Jasem Mutlaq's Ekos has over at Indilib.org.

Sometimes you can use the following approach to detect the sharpness.

The texture parameters can be calculated by the pgmtexture prog of the 
netpbm tools.
