--- Comment #4 from Jérôme Chabod <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 2008-03-31 13:42:46 ---
I have a few news about the evolution of this feature.

* first the good news :)
I have MTP synchronisation working on my gPodder and I use it regulary since a
few weeks. I can transfer and delete episodes on my samsung YPU3 from within
gpodder the same way ipod owners do.

* the bad news now :(
The whole is experimental and not deliverable as it:
1- The gui freeze during synchronisation. It's not very easthetic during big
file synchronisation and users are not able to know about the synchronisation
status, but it works. I tried a lot of stuff with threading and gtk without
success.
2- I use pylibmtp (https://launchpad.net/pylibmtp) for the synchronisation.
Unfortunately, this module has been abandoned by his developper in developpment
phase. I contacted him, he would accept patches, but won't work on the module
himself due to lake of time (and since I'm the only known user until now). I
have also few time to work on it. Most has been done, but major problems
subsist with this module:
    - the sources must be grabbed from a bazar repository
    - it's not trivial to compile and install (no make file is delivered)
    - the sources must be patched for using with libmtp >= 2.0 (default
installed in current distrib): I have already patch the parts needed for
gpodder.
    - anormal situation are not handled elegantly: i.e. if you transfer while
your device is unplugged or in use, gPodder will crash with a segmentation
fault (!). If you transfer a file when your device is full, it won't copy and
you won't have any clue or feedback on what is wrong...

PROPOSITION:
------------
We shouldn't commit this feature to gpodder now (and not before 1.0 release).
However, since I have already written the required patches and acquired a
"know-how" on using pylibmtp, I propose to post all patches on this thread, and
write a new page on the wiki (like "using MTP devices (experimental)" ) where I
would warn about it's usage and explain step by step how to get MTP working in
gpodder (including patching and installing pylibmtp).
If pylibmtp (or an alternative) evolves to a stable release, it will be time to
include it into gpodder.

What do you think?
