Do you really want to ellipsize only the first two columns on purpose or do you want to ellipsize all "additional" columns? To give some feedback on the original idea (remembering column widths - it is possible to retrieve the width of the columns via .get_property('width') on the columns, but this is a read-only property, so we are not able to set this.
