Bug #: 1488
Summary: Automatic id3 tag updating
Classification: Unclassified
Product: gPodder
Version: 2.20
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: feature request
Priority: low
Component: Application
AssignedTo: [email protected]

There is a real need for Gpodder to automatically change id3 tags so that
podcasts will show up in a reasonable order on a player device. In it's
simplest form this could just be some check-boxes in Gpodder settings. One
would cause the album tag to be changed to the name of the podcast, as given in
the "podcast details" window. Another would do the same for the artist name,
and a third would cause the genre to be changed to "podcast".
This would eliminate annoyances such as podcasts showing up as music, or
showing as individual items instead of grouped, or in a folder full of "unknown
album" podcasts. The last two are real annoyances with my Sansa Fuze Plus,
since many podcasts leave the album blank, or even put The episode name there,
and the Fuze considers this to be the podcast name. The old Fuze had a folder
view, but the new one doesn't, so good meta-data is critical. I Know this is
also true for Ipods, and most other players.
Perhaps, in the future, more sophisticated tag updating could be added to
"Podcast Details". This could allow fields to be swapped, or set to arbitrary
values, on a per podcast basis, but personally I don't need anything that
fancy. All I need is the album name changed to the name of the podcast, and
the global checkbox will work fine for this. Since this is something I can do
as a bash script, or with easytag, adding it to gpodder should be trivial. And
that way I don't have to run a script before I load my podcasts.
