If you set the audio (or video) player in the gPodder preferences to a specific application (i.e. set it to VLC, even if the system default is VLC) then there will be an option to preview the media. The reason why you can't preview files with the system default is that some environments don't know how to handle a file with extension .partial (which is was we use for partial downloads).
