You can actually already edit the channel title, which is then used for
syncing the episodes. Simply double-click on the channel on the left and
then edit the title of the channel and close the channel prefs dialog.

After that, syncing should be synced to the right folder on your MP3
player.

Sounds nice, at least as an alternative to the external player options.
I could imagine a podcast playing service inside the gPodder codebase,
with the GUI calling it to play/stop/.. a podcast and the playing
service marking an episode as played when it's finished.

For the library part, I think it's best to go with gstreamer, an easy
tutorial for python-gstreamer can be found here:
