The pauses after a download could be related to the tag updates. Just run gPodder in the console with the --verbose switch (or "make test" if you are using the SVN version) and after the download, if there is a pause, the last line on the console should tell you that it's updating the file's tag. I don't know if I can make this faster, apart from making the tag update happen just a second later after the download and putting it in its own "tag update" thread to keep the GUI responding, or should I simply show an information dialog that the tag is being updated?
