I found this https://code.launchpad.net/pylibmtp which might be interesting 
but I don't really have time to look into it now.

For a quick solution you could use mtpfs [1] (a fuse filesystem) in 
conjunction with gPodder's FS-based media player sync method. I have a little 
script which takes care of the mounting/unmounting part which you can get 
here: http://pastebin.ca/811034 (It's not perfect but it does the job ;)
