There is no official list of preferred NICs.  Check
http://rom-o-matic.net/gpxe/gpxe-git/gpxe.git/contrib/rom-o-matic/ for
the list of drivers.

Additionally, gpxebot on #etherboot IRC on chat.freenode.net can check
for gPXE support given a PCI ID:
<stefanha> gpxebot: lspci 10ec:8139
<gpxebot> rtl8139
