This is absolutely strange... I don't have that much memory on my laptop and I compile graph-tool just fine. I'm curious: What GCC version do you have in your ubuntu install (exact version, including ubuntu patches)? Did you try with different versions? Does the compilation stay below 4G if you disable sfdp_layout? If not, what maximum value does it scale to? Although this is almost certainly a problem with a specific version of GCC, I intend to modify sfdp_layout to use less memory during compilation in any case.
