I just want to point out that I've been maintaining a branch of graphite at lp:~zirpu/graphite/mine which I made a bit easier to install by using eggs and a virtualenv.
The 'README.allans.quick.install' should have all the info you need for a quick install. If I left something out or it doesn't work for you, please let me know and I'll fix.
